Dear Principal,

Application for the Post of English Language Teacher

I am writing to apply for the post of English Language Teacher with reference to your advertisement on Ming Pao. I believe my linguistic and pedagogical knowledge alongside my enthusiasm for teaching can enable me to contribute to your school.

Personally, I aspire to be a teacher because education is profound and influential, even life-changing in some cases. I want to nudge students in their individual directions so that they can realise their untapped potential and talents. Currently, I am a final year student at the University of Hong Kong majoring in English education and I will graduate with first class honours. Through my university studies, I have built a solid foundation for my teaching career in terms of linguistic and pedagogical knowledge. I am thankful that I was given grade A- or above in seven linguistic and pedagogical courses. I also took some additional courses such as game therapy and mental health first aid so that I can assist and cater to different types of students including those with special educational needs in the evolving world of education.

In addition to my studies, I had some local and overseas teaching experience. I completed my four-month teaching practicum at Hong Kong College. I was responsible for teaching and preparing lesson plans and teaching materials for secondary one, three and four English classes. I also designed a reading assessment for the secondary four students. I am very honoured and grateful that my teaching competence was recognised with the Eighth Hong Kong Outstanding Prospective Teachers Award. In 2019, my passion for teaching brought me to Vietnam for a six-week programme as a volunteer English teacher. This overseas teaching experience shaped me into an internationally-minded English teacher with heightened awareness of the needs of students who learn English as a second language (ESL) or as a foreign language (EFL).

Lifelong learning applies not only to students, but also to teachers. I will continue to engage in professional development as a teacher while serving at your school.
